What area do you specialize in as a business broker?
Small businesses with revenues under $3,000,000.
What led you to business brokering?
I had a couple of bad experiences working with brokers who were very unprofessional. As a business consultant, I believed I could do better in assisting my clients transition in or out of business.
What have you accomplished this year as a GABB Board member?
This has been a learning experience for me. As a relatively new member, I have been able to learn how the GABB works and have developed a better appreciation for the Board’s desire to not only improve opportunities for brokers, but also improve the level of professionalism of members and our image to the public.
How has the GABB helped you improve as a professional business broker?
Having a wealth of resources available through the membership has been extremely valuable. Again, as a new broker, I have a lot to learn and the membership has been very accommodating in answering questions.
What advice would you give to people who are trying to build a business brokering practice?
I would stress the importance of education and that it can come in many forms. Learn from the successes and failures of others by developing relationships with successful peers. Find your niche, always be honest, and don’t compromise.
What habits do you have that you think make you successful?
I think my success is tied to my active networking habits. I never eat lunch alone and have almost as many breakfast meetings as lunch meetings because this is when people, who otherwise are not available, can meet. Networking has helped build credibility and expanded my circle of influence such that people are now reaching out to me for meetings.
What else would you like to tell us?
I have an MBA and have more than 30 years of business experience with more than 22 years as a business owner. As a private investor, I have invested in, bought, sold and started businesses for more than 20 years, so I understand both buy-side and sell-side dynamics. I also understand how to grow a business and how to maximize value. These are all experiences and credentials I believe allow me to deliver exceptional value to my clients.
